Governor's Innovation Lab at CI

The Governor’s Innovation Lab (InLab) at CI connects our portfolio companies to state partners to help move pilots from proof of concept to purchase order in less than a year.

How the Governor's Innovation Lab Works

One of our biggest strengths as a venture capital arm is that we operate within the state government—a high-potential market, but one with high barriers to entry for early-stage companies.

Connecticut has taken a nation-leading approach to modernizing its services, going beyond thought leadership to direct action. In 2021, Governor Lamont passed a law that allows CI to accelerate the modernization of state services by leveraging our portfolio. Our state’s departments and agencies can now launch pilots with CI portfolio companies for specific needs and, once proven, procure their services directly within a year.

The InLab team applies a rigorous process to continually review both agencies’ needs and the suitability of our portfolio of solutions. We meet frequently with commissioners to understand their strategic agendas and priorities, identifying areas that require further exploration and validation.

GETTING RESULTS

Since its launch in 2022, the Governor’s Innovation Lab has matched several CI portfolio companies with government customers across areas like behavioral health, affordable housing, education technology and sustainable infrastructure.

Intellihealth

CI portfolio company Intellihealth has been working closely with the Connecticut state comptroller to bring better obesity care to state employees. Comptroller Sean Scanlon speaks about how the partnership with Intellihealth has been successful in helping Connecticut employees get easier access to the GLP-1 drugs (i.e., Ozempic, Mounjaro, Wegovy and less well known alternatives) and lifestyle/behavioral interventions that help stem diabetes, obesity and other weight-related illnesses.

budderfly

Budderfly, a climate tech company changing the way businesses manage energy, launched a 12-month pilot with UConn Health. Through the pilot, Budderfly will deploy its innovative technology to deliver the hospital substantial energy cost savings and achieve a net zero carbon footprint at its Child Care Center building in Farmington.
