Dr. Sandra Weller, Professor and Chair of Molecular Biology and Biophysics, received her BS from Stanford University and PhD from the University of Wisconsin. After a postdoctoral fellowship at Harvard Medical School, she moved to the University of Connecticut School of Medicine in 1984 and has established an innovative research program studying the human pathogen herpes simplex virus, publishing over 100 peer-reviewed publications. She is a Board of Trustees Distinguished Professor, the highest honor bestowed on a faculty member of the University of Connecticut. Her research program has raised over $13 million. She served as the first female president of the Connecticut Academy of Science and Engineering, working to promote STEM education and public outreach, and as president of the Association of Medical School Microbiology and Immunology Chairs promoting, advancing and supporting the educational and scientific endeavors in microbiology and immunology in medical schools in the United States and Canada.
